At the Valley, we believe that a high quality PSHE education enables pupils to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy and safe, and prepare for life and work in modern Britain. Evidence shows that well-delivered PSHE programmes have a positive impact on both academic and non-academic outcomes for pupils, particularly the most vulnerable and disadvantaged. At the Valley Primary School we aim to develop skills and attributes such as resilience, self-esteem, risk-management, team-working and critical thinking.

We choose to deliver Personal, Social, and Health Education using Jigsaw, the mindful approach to PSHE. Using this approach the children can reflect on their experiences and make informed choices, developing personally, and socially by tackling many spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. They also learn to understand and respect our common humanity, diversity and differences so that they can go on to form effective, fulfilling relationships that are an essential part of life and learning.

Through the Jigsaw units of work and cross curricular links, our learners cover the core themes of ‘Being Me in My World’, ‘Celebrating Difference’, ‘Dreams and Goals’, ‘Healthy Me’, ‘Relationships’ and ‘Changing Me’. As part of the ‘Changing Me’ unit in the summer term, Year 6 will be taught about the important changes that occur at puberty.  Further information can be found in our key documents.
