Mental Health and Wellbeing at the Valley
Mental Health is “a state of well-being in which every individual realises his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.” (World Health Organisation).
At The Valley Community Primary School, we aim to promote positive mental health for every member of our staff and pupil. We pursue this aim using both universal whole school approaches and specialised, targeted approaches aimed at vulnerable pupils. In addition to promoting positive mental health, we aim to recognise and respond to mental ill health.
Mental health and wellbeing is just as important as physical health. We want our pupils to grow up feeling happy and healthy, both mentally and physically. We know that good mental health and wellbeing can have a positive impact on all aspects of a child’s life, including their academic achievement, social relationships, and overall happiness.
Our Curriculum
That’s why we have a dedicated mental health and wellbeing curriculum, which we deliver through a variety of teaching and learning activities, including:
- Circle time: Circle time is a daily activity where pupils come together to discuss their feelings, share ideas, and learn about different social and emotional topics.
- PSHE lessons: PSHE lessons are planned and delivered by our experienced teachers. They cover a wide range of topics, including mental health and wellbeing, relationships, and sex education.
- Assemblies: We hold weekly assemblies where we discuss important mental health and wellbeing issues and celebrate the achievements of our pupils.
- Extra-curricular activities: We offer a variety of extra-curricular activities, such as sports clubs, music lessons, and drama groups. These activities can help to improve pupils’ mental and emotional wellbeing by providing them with opportunities to develop their skills and talents, and to make new friends.
Our Supporting Measures
In addition to our curriculum, we also have a number of other measures in place to support the mental health and wellbeing of our pupils, including:
- A dedicated pastoral team: Our pastoral team is available to support pupils with any social or emotional concerns.
- A variety of counselling and support services: We offer a variety of counselling and support services to pupils who need them, including individual and group counselling.
- A strong culture of anti-bullying: We promote respect and tolerance for all, and we have a strong culture of anti-bullying.
- A celebration of diversity: We celebrate the diversity of our pupils and encourage them to be proud of their identities.
We are committed to providing our pupils with the support they need to maintain good mental health and wellbeing. We know that this is essential for them to succeed in all aspects of their lives.
Tips for Parents and Carers
Here are some tips for parents and carers on how to support your child’s mental health and wellbeing:
- Talk to your child about their feelings: It’s important to create a safe and open space where your child feels comfortable talking to you about their feelings.
- Help your child to develop healthy coping mechanisms: Teach your child healthy ways to cope with difficult emotions, such as exercise, relaxation techniques, and talking to a trusted adult.
- Set a good example: Children learn by watching the adults in their lives. Be mindful of your own mental health and wellbeing, and try to model healthy coping mechanisms for your child.
- Seek professional help if needed: If you are concerned about your child’s mental health, please don’t hesitate to seek professional help. There are a number of organizations that can provide support and guidance.
We are here to support you and your child on every step of the way.
