Application for Term Time Absence in Extreme/Exceptional Circumstances

The DFE states that schools should not allow pupils to go on holiday/extended visits during term time unless there are exceptional circumstances. The Valley Community Primary School follows this DFE advice.

From 1st September 2018, the criteria for issuing a penalty notice were changed to 5 unauthorised absences. If you do decide to take your child on holiday/extended visit during term time their absences will be coded as unauthorised until they return to school.

Unauthorised absence recorded against your child may lead to a Penalty Notice being issued, this being £80 (per parent, per child). Your child may also lose their school place.

Note – when a Penalty Notice is are issued it should be paid within 21 days. If payment is not made within 21 days the tariff doubles to £180; if payment is still not received then parents will be liable for prosecution.

Absence from school has a detrimental effect on a child’s education and progress. However, we are aware that exceptional circumstances may arise which means it is necessary for some families/carers to take their children out of school during term time. If you wish to apply to take your child out of school during term time you must to complete the application overleaf and return it to the School Attendance Officer.

The Head Teacher will inform you of the decision as to whether the holiday/extended visit can be authorised (exceptional circumstances) or will be unauthorised. You must await the decision before making any plans.

If your child has not been given authorisation for term time absences, please note that:

If your child has unauthorised absences due to a holiday/extended visit of 20 days or more then there is a risk of losing their place in school.

When your child returns from an extended visit (20 days or more), you must contact the school to make an appointment to see the Headteacher/Deputy Headteacher if you wish your child to return to this school as there may no longer be a place available for them.

The absence will be recorded as unauthorised absence (G on the register) until they return to school and will result in a reduced overall attendance. Depending on the length of the absence it is possible that a penalty notice may be issued and/or your child could lose their place at The Valley Community Primary School.
