Reading at the Valley
We believe that reading is at the heart of all learning. With access to reading support and skills, our pupils are better equipped to progress their learning across the whole curriculum. In partnership with parents and carers, our pupils make excellent progress.
This page outlines our school’s expectations of reading at home and provides parents with resources to support this taking place.
Key Stage 1
Pupils are expected to read at home with an adult, at least 3 times each week and have their reading record signed and dated on each occasion. Please refer to the below document for further information.

Key Stage 2
In Key Stage 2, pupils build their reading confidence further and continue to read at home at least 3 times each week. An adult should sign and date their reading record each time to acknowledge that reading has taken place. A fortnightly reading task should also be completed by pupils – this is explained in the below document for further information.

Statutory Spellings and High Frequency Words
Your child is expected to know how to read and spell certain words throughout points in their primary school life. This can also include being able to apply spelling rules and follow taught phonetic choices.
